Pudong's New
Area
Pudong is along the estuary of the Yangtze River and opposite
to the centre of Shanghai on the west side of the Huangpu
River. It has sound natural geographical conditions and economic
foundation, which is a treasure land with broad prospect remained
to be developed.
The Pudong New Area is a triangular area adjacent to the
city proper, stretching to the east of the Huangpu River,
to the southwest of the Yangtze estuary,including the former
country of Chuansha and former Sanlin village of Minhang district.
North of this area is within a radius of 15 kilometers from
the city's present down-town area. It covers an area of 522
square kilometers, and it now has a population of 1,400,000.
At present is is the home to the four national development
zones in Shanghai. They are Lujiazui Finance & Trade Zone,
Zhangjiang High-Tech Park, Waigaoqiao Free Trade Zone, and
Jinqiao Export Processing Zone.
Pudong borders on the sea in the east and on the Huangpu
River in the west. It has fine deep-water ports with super
conditions. The transportation facilities are as follows:
along the east bank of the Huangpu River, there are now 157
berths of which, 33 are 10,000-ton-class ships and 160 berths
with a cargo handling capacity of 4.6million tons. The total
length of existing roads is 437 kilometers,of which, urban
roads are 80 kilometers long and rural roads are 357 kilometers
long. For cross-river transportation, there are now two bridges,
2 river tunnels, 16 ferry lines for passengers and 2 ferry
lines for motor vehicles.
The Pudong New Area is an organic part of the economic and
social development of Shanghai. Integrated with the overall
urban planning of Shanghai, the development of Pudong will
gradually proceed in a planned and phased way according to
priority.
